WWII bomb near Tesla plant east of Berlin detonated

The World War II bomb found on June 27 in a forest near the Tesla factory in Grünheide was detonated on June 29 afternoon. The previously established exclusion zone was lifted.

The bomb was safely detonated around 1 PM on June 29. The exclusion zone, which had been expanded to include more surrounding roads, was subsequently lifted. The zone covered a one-kilometer radius, including roads L23 and L38, but not the Eastern Berlin Ring or the RE1 railway line.

Several commercial areas and parts of the Tesla factory, though usually inactive on weekends, were evacuated for the detonation of the 250-kilogram bomb. The Tesla protest camp, located outside the exclusion zone, was not evacuated. Airspace was temporarily closed, redirecting flights at BER airport.

The bomb, found in a forest area near Tesla's factory in Grünheide (Oder-Spree), was confirmed by the Grünheide municipality's public order office. The bomb was not transportable and was discovered in the planned expansion area of Tesla's site, which has been protested by activists since February.

The area is currently being inspected for old munitions, as the site is intended for Tesla's planned freight station. The bomb, of British origin, was reported to the municipality by the munitions disposal service on Wednesday, according to the head of the public order office.

Searches for old munitions have been ongoing since mid-June, according to a spokesperson for Brandenburg's Environment Ministry. It is expected that searches will continue even after the current bomb's detonation.

The Brandenburg Ministry of the Interior had previously warned about potential dangers from old unexploded ordnance in the debate over the protest camp.

Protesters at the forest camp were surprised by the discovery of the World War II bomb on Thursday. Authorities had not informed the activists, according to some who spoke to an rbb reporter on site. Now, they plan to discuss and decide whether to temporarily evacuate the camp.

Tesla's expansion plans, which sparked protests, have been adjusted following public criticism. The new development plan proposes clearing about half of the originally planned forest area. Tesla scaled back its plans for storage and logistics spaces and abandoned plans for employee training rooms and a daycare center. However, the construction of a freight station on the site is still planned.
