US Firm Micron Breaks Ground for $2.75 Billion Semiconductor Plant in Gujarat

Micron Technology, a leading American semiconductor manufacturer, has begun construction of a $2.75 billion semiconductor testing and assembly plant in Gujarat’s Sanand, marking a significant step in India's efforts to meet domestic semiconductor demand and reduce imports.

This development comes just three months after Micron first announced its plans to establish the plant, making it the largest investment under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).

The groundbreaking ceremony (Bhoomi Pujan) of the plant, which is being set up on a sprawling 93 acres of land, was held on Saturday, approximately 90 days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi signed a deal with the Micron leadership during his visit to the US.

The construction of the project is expected to take just over a year to complete, and the Union Minister of Information and Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, stated that the first chip rollout from the facility would happen by December 2024.

The Union minister called it “an example of a double engine sarkar.” He said, “In just a few months — land allocation, all the project agreements were signed, and now the actual construction work will begin."

Semiconductor chips are essential components of electronic devices like mobile phones and laptops, as well as other electronic components in vehicles, medical devices, industrial equipment, and more. Currently, the country meets its $24 billion semiconductor demand entirely through imports.

According to minister Vaishnav, India will soon meet the domestic demand and even export the chips.

"Currently, the country is seeing a demand of 2 lakh crore chips, in the coming years this will increase to 5 lakh crores. The way we are going about things, soon India will not just fulfil domestic demand but will also export chips,” the minister said.

The Micron project is poised to generate up to 5,000 direct Micron jobs and 15,000 community jobs in the coming years.

The government also hopes that Micron’s entry into India in assembly, testing, marking, and packaging (ATMP) is expected to attract other companies as well. The Union Minister also added that two big semiconductor proposals are under process and expected to take shape in the coming few months.

The India Semiconductor Mission, launched by the central government in December 2021, aims at positioning India as a significant player in semiconductor technology.
