TSMC to begin trial production of 2nm chips for Apple next week

TSMC, Apple's primary chip supplier, will begin trial production of its next-generation 2nm chips next week at its Baoshan plant in northern Taiwan. The facility is already equipped with the necessary tools and components for testing, which were installed in the second quarter.

Apple plans to use these advanced 2nm chips in its products starting next year, with the iPhone 17 series expected to be the first to feature them. The 2nm process allows for a higher transistor density, leading to faster speeds and better power efficiency.

The new M5 chip, based on the 2nm process, is anticipated to deliver a 10-15% performance boost and a 30% reduction in power consumption compared to the current 3nm M4 chip. Similar performance gains are expected for the A18 Pro chip in the iPhone 17 Pro series.

While the chips are currently in their initial testing phase, TSMC is on track to begin mass production next year. The company is working to achieve high yields to ensure a stable supply for Apple. Apple is TSMC's largest customer, and securing a significant portion of the 2nm chip orders is crucial for the supplier.

Following the iPhone 17, Apple plans to integrate the 2nm chips into its 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. It remains to be seen whether Apple will secure all of TSMC's 2nm production capacity for 2025.
