According to a report from United Daily News (UDN), the Kaohsiung city government has approved a land rezoning proposal for the construction of a third fab at the Nanzih Technology Industrial Park. The new fab will occupy 17.22 hectares, located east of TSMC’s first plant within the 238-hectare industrial park.
Demand for Nvidia’s upcoming Blackwell-series AI chips has already exceeded supply, prompting Nvidia to increase production with TSMC. This surge in demand likely influenced TSMC's decision to expand its Kaohsiung site.
TSMC began construction on its first fab in the industrial park in August 2022, with mass production expected next year. Meanwhile, construction of the second fab is ongoing, but it required substantial soil reclamation due to its location on previously state-owned oil refinery land. Similarly, more polluted land will need to be cleaned for the third fab.
Earlier this month, TSMC halted construction at its CoWoS advanced semiconductor packaging plant in Chiayi Science Park due to the discovery of suspected archaeological ruins. To continue development, TSMC proposed relocating the plant and starting work on a second CoWoS facility at the park while resolving issues at the original site.
