Zilog is retiring the Z80 after 48 years on the market. Originally developed as an extension of the Intel 8080, it became one of the most popular 8-bit CPUs in gaming and computing.
Interested parties have a few months to place orders before support ends. Wafer Foundry Manufacturer will stop accepting "last time buy" orders for Z80 products in mid-June. Zilog will process orders based on demand, with delivery dates from WFM.
The Z80, released in 1976, was a milestone in gaming hardware. It was used in home computers, gaming consoles like Sega's Master System and Nintendo's Game Boy, as well as in arcade games, military applications, synthesizers, and other devices.
Zilog licensed the Z80 technology to US and European companies, leading to compatible versions by Japanese and Soviet manufacturers.
Zilog now focuses on advanced microcontrollers compatible with the original Z80 design.
