Montreal police arrested billionaire Robert Miller, founder of the company Future Electronics, on May 30 to face sex charges involving 10 complainants, many of whom were minors when the alleged offences occurred.
During a news conference, police outlined 21 alleged offences committed by 80-year-old Miller between 1994 and 2016. These offences include sexual assault, sexual interference, and enticing prostitution. Miller was arrested at his Westmount home and is set to appear in court on July 3rd.
Inspector David Shane emphasized that these charges communicate to victims that it's never too late to come forward, crediting last year's media reports for sparking a revival of the investigation. Interestingly, a previous investigation of Miller was opened by the police force in 2009, but the province's prosecution service didn't proceed with charges at that time.
In February 2023, amid mounting reports by CBC and Radio-Canada, Miller voluntarily stepped down from his roles as Chairman and CEO of the global electronics distributor, Future Electronics. Reports alleged that he had been supplying young women with cash, extravagant gifts, and trips in exchange for sexual favors. By stepping down, Miller aimed to concentrate on safeguarding his reputation. Prior to the emergence of these criminal charges, he was already entangled in court, defending against civil lawsuits linked to these allegations.
Inspector Shane encouraged potential victims and those possessing pertinent details to aid in their investigation to step forward, reasserting during the press conference that their inquiry into this case and similar instances of sexual exploitation remains ongoing.
Standard protocol in sexual assault cases, a publication ban has been imposed on the names of the complainants, including one individual who was under 14 when the supposed offences occurred. Additional charges against Miller involve sexual exploitation and engaging in sexual activities with a minor for gifts or incentives.
Miller sold Future Electronics to Taiwan-based WT Microelectronics for $3.8 billion in September 2023 and it was fully acquired in April of this year.
