Taiwanese semiconductor company GlobalWafers announced on Tuesday, June 18, that its Italian subsidiary, MEMC Electronic Materials S.p.A., has received approval from the European Commission's Directorate-General for Competition for its expansion project. Additionally, the company has secured a research and development subsidy of up to €103 million (approximately NT$3.582 billion) from the Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy to establish a 12-inch wafer plant.
MEMC President Marco Sciamanna, in a press release, stated that the new plant will support the development of downstream products in four high-tech areas emphasized by the Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI): Sensor applications (SENSE), Logic applications (THINK), Power applications (ACT), and Communication applications (COMMUNICATE).
GlobalWafers CEO Hsu Hsiu-lan (徐秀蘭) stated that in an era of economic regionalization, the European Commission and the Italian government have strategically designated the semiconductor and high-tech industries as top investment priorities to enhance their resilience.
Hsu mentioned that the new 12-inch wafer plant built by MEMC S.p.A. meets the European Commission's standards for research and development of advanced technologies and pioneering industrial layouts. MEMC S.p.A. adopts advanced manufacturing technologies to meet the increasingly complex demands of its customers. She expressed gratitude for the support from the European Commission, the Italian business sector, and Italy's Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy.
GlobalWafers stated that MEMC S.p.A. has production facilities in both Novara and Merano and has been operating in Italy for several decades. The wafers produced are used in various devices that form the backbone of Europe's high-tech economy, covering fields such as automotive, industrial IoT, consumer electronics, and medical equipment.
This expansion by MEMC S.p.A. will create 600 construction-related jobs and 150 long-term positions in Novara. Once the new 12-inch wafer plant is fully operational, it will be capable of recycling up to 50% of the production water and plans to manufacture advanced silicon wafers using 100% renewable energy, striving to reduce its environmental footprint.
This investment marks a significant step in strengthening Europe's semiconductor supply chain and fostering innovation in the high-tech sector.
