SK Hynix plans to invest $14.6 billion in building a new memory chip complex in South Korea to meet the growing demand for semiconductors used in AI development.
The initial investment of 5.3 trillion won kick off construction in April, with completion targeted for November 2025. The total investment will exceed 20 trillion won as the site is equipped over the long term.
SK Hynix in December became South Korea’s second-most valuable company, is expanding ahead of that anticipated rebound. It foresees demand for HBM growing 60% annually in coming years, even as sales of regular DRAM climb alongside a proliferation of datacenters.
The company plans to invest in a new plant in Cheongju and an advanced packaging facility in Indiana, USA. Additionally, it is investing in the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster.
