Samsung Electro-Mechanics to Supply Glass Substrate Samples to 2–3 Clients This Year, Developing Key Materials for Mass Production

Samsung Electro-Mechanics (SEMCO, KOSPI: 009150) is intensifying its efforts in the glass substrate market, a key area for next-generation semiconductor advancements. The company plans to supply glass substrate samples to 2–3 customers, including a major global electronics company, by the end of 2025. Mass production is targeted for 2027, supported by a pilot production line under construction at its Sejong facility in South Korea.

Collaboration for Cutting-Edge Materials

To strengthen its position in this emerging market, SEMCO is collaborating with South Korean materials company SoulBrain (KOSDAQ: 357780) to develop etching solutions essential for glass substrate manufacturing. These solutions include precision drilling and removing residual impurities. SoulBrain’s expertise in etching liquids, deposition materials, and polishing liquids—gained through its work with OLED panel production—gives it a competitive advantage in glass processing technologies.

Additionally, SEMCO is working with Chemtronics and Germany’s LPKF, leveraging their expertise to enhance glass substrate manufacturing capabilities. This ecosystem expansion is further supported by technical synergies with Samsung Display, another key entity within the Samsung Group.

The Advantages of Glass Substrates

Glass substrates are becoming an essential component in advanced semiconductor packaging. Compared to traditional plastic substrates, glass offers thinner designs, greater support for intricate circuits, and a potential 30% reduction in power consumption. These advantages are driving global semiconductor leaders like Intel, AMD, and TSMC to explore glass substrates for advanced packaging solutions.

Industry experts predict the global glass substrate market will grow from $7.1 billion in 2023 to $8.4 billion by 2028, reflecting the rising demand for high-performance semiconductors.

Competitive Landscape

While SEMCO is ramping up its efforts, other South Korean companies are also making significant strides in the glass substrate market. Absolics, a subsidiary of SK Group, is building a glass substrate factory in Georgia, US, supported by the CHIPS Act. Similarly, LG Innotek plans to begin trial production of glass substrates by late 2025.

Outlook

With its strategic partnerships and focus on innovation, SEMCO is positioning itself as a leader in glass substrate development. By aligning with global trends and investing in cutting-edge materials, the company is set to play a critical role in shaping the future of advanced semiconductor packaging.
