US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said Huawei Technologies Co.’s latest phone shows that China remains behind on cutting-edge chip technology.
Raimondo, In an interview with CBS News’ 60 Minutes, highlighted the success of the Biden administration's export controls on China, downplaying Huawei's technological breakthrough.
During her visit to China in August, Huawei, based in Shenzhen, revealed a smartphone running on an advanced 7-nanometer chip developed domestically, a technology that surpasses the US expectations to contain China's progress.
She emphasized the US's advanced semiconductor technology compared to China's, vowing strong action to protect national security. The US is considering blacklisting Chinese companies aiding Huawei in chip production.
Raimondo's department are distributing over 100 billion in grants to boost domestic semiconductor production and are coordinating with allies to limit China's chipmaking and AI ambitions.
