Taiwan chipmaker Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (PSMC) inaugurated a total NT$300 billion (US$9.3 billion) new fab in Tongluo, Miaoli County on May 2nd.
Powerchip began constructing the Miaoli fab in March 2021, The facility spans 110,000 square meters, featuring a 28,000-square-meter clean room area. The fab currently produces 50,000 12-inch wafers monthly using 55, 40, and 28-nanometer technologies. Future plans include adding equipment for 20nm processes.
President Tsai Ing-wen and nearly 700 representatives from the semiconductor industry attended the new factory's inauguration ceremony, which was presided over by PSMC Chairman Frank Huang (黄崇仁).

At the event, PSMC Chairman Frank Huang emphasized Taiwan's semiconductor leadership, attributing it to efficient operations and government support.
He said the establishment of several semiconductor research institutes at universities to train talent during Tsai's term in office has driven the progress of Taiwan's semiconductor and high-tech industries.
Tsai is about to end her second and final four-year term on May 20.
