John Schulman, a co-founder of OpenAI and a key figure in developing ChatGPT, has left to join rival Anthropic. This marks another senior departure from OpenAI in recent months.

Schulman will focus on AI alignment at Anthropic, a group dedicated to ensuring AI aligns with human values. In a memo to colleagues on August 5, he explained, "I want to deepen my focus on AI alignment and return to hands-on technical work with experts in this field."

He clarified that his departure wasn't due to a lack of support for alignment research at OpenAI, noting the company's strong commitment to this area.

Schulman's exit occurs during a period of growth and turmoil for OpenAI. Last November, CEO Sam Altman was fired and then reinstated five days later due to employee pressure. Most directors involved in his firing have since been replaced.

OpenAI faces scrutiny from lawmakers and industry leaders over the rapid pace and direction of its AI development.

Global AI deal values reached $331 billion in 2023, up from $211 billion in 2022, according to GlobalData. The peak was in Q2 2023 with $119 billion, followed by a drop to $68 billion in Q3. GlobalData forecasts the AI market will be worth $908.7 billion by 2030.
