On the afternoon of August 13th, local time, Nanya Technology (2408.TW), a leading memory manufacturer, announced that a temporary power outage caused by a severe thunderstorm had halted some of its machinery operations.
The company immediately implemented emergency measures and conducted safety checks, ensuring the safety of all employees. Nanya Technology is now working to restore operations, which are expected to resume within 2-3 days.
Despite these efforts, the outage resulted in damage to wafers, required equipment repairs, and production interruptions, with estimated losses ranging from NTD 300 to 500 million (approximately USD 9.3 to 15.5 million). The exact figure will be confirmed following a thorough assessment.
Nanya Technology’s plant experienced a 20-minute power outage during the incident on August 13th. The uninterruptible power supply (UPS) was activated, minimizing damage in the photolithography and etching areas. However, areas without UPS protection are still under assessment for potential impacts.
In contrast, memory giant Micron (NASDAQ: MU) reported only a voltage sag due to the same incident and stated that there were no significant issues. Micron confirmed that the voltage fluctuation at its Taiwan facility did not harm employees, and operations remain normal.
