MediaTek (2454.TW) is diving into the AI server chip market, aiming to build its own chips featuring ARM architecture and leveraging TSMC's 3nm process.
This move signifies MediaTek's ambition to expand beyond its traditional mobile chip focus and compete in the growing AI market. While MediaTek previously collaborated with NVIDIA for the "AI PC" segment, its new AI server chips target the mid-to-low performance tier, a space where demand is surging among startups and cloud service providers like Microsoft, Google, and Meta.
MediaTek's chips are expected to reach the "tape out" stage in the first half of 2025, with small-volume shipments starting in the second half of 2024. Mass production is anticipated in 2026, subject to market demand. This strategic maneuver positions MediaTek as a potential player in the AI server chip landscape, challenging established players like NVIDIA.
