The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has recently granted approval to Walton Digi-Tech Industries to locally produce printed circuit boards (PCBs) specifically for handsets. This milestone makes Walton the first Bangladeshi company to manufacture this product within the country.
Walton already produces PCBs for computers, mobile phone chargers, and batteries, but this new venture will see the company establishing its first facility for manufacturing multilayer PCBs designed for mobile phones. Initially, Walton will receive provisional clearance to import raw materials and produce PCBs for a period of six months. Final approval will be granted upon successful quality assessments during this trial period.
This approval signifies a significant opportunity to increase value addition in the mobile phone manufacturing sector in Bangladesh, which currently heavily relies on imported components. The value contributed by PCBs typically ranges from 5 percent to 7 percent of the total manufacturing cost of a mobile phone, depending on the device's specifications and features, as noted by industry experts.
In late February, a delegation from the BTRC, led by the Spectrum Division commissioner, visited Walton's manufacturing facility and conducted an assessment. The delegation reported that the facility is well-equipped with the necessary machinery, space, testing instruments, and skilled workforce required for producing PCBs for mobile phones. Manufacturing PCBs locally would also make Walton eligible for VAT rebates.
To qualify for these incentives, a manufacturer must not only establish a facility capable of producing PCBs, chargers, batteries, housings, and casings but also ensure that at least 50 percent of these components are produced in-house.
