LG Innotek & Intel Partner to Deploy AI Vision Inspection for High-End PCB (FC-BGA) Manufacturing

LG Innotek announced on April 8 that it will implement Intel's Artificial Intelligence (AI) vision inspection solutions at its Gumi Plant 4. The collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), is set to enhance production efficiency and product quality for key manufacturing processes, including flip-chip ball grid arrays (FC-BGA) and camera modules.

AI vision inspection technology automates the process of detecting defects during manufacturing, replacing manual checks with high-precision cameras driven by AI. This advancement improves accuracy and reduces defect rates—critical factors in production environments where quality control is essential.

Under the new partnership, LG Innotek will integrate Intel's AI vision inspection system, based on i-GPU (integrated graphics processing unit) technology, across all its production lines at the Gumi facility. The i-GPU, embedded in the central processing unit (CPU), offers a cost-effective way to implement AI capabilities without the need for expensive external GPUs or additional PCs.

This collaboration follows a successful trial run last year, when LG Innotek applied Intel's AI inspection solutions to its mobile camera module production lines. The company now plans to expand the system to other high-value production areas, including those focused on FC-BGA substrates. The goal is to accelerate the development of LG Innotek's smart factories and drive production efficiency.

By leveraging Intel's AI technology, LG Innotek aims to improve inspection accuracy to nearly 100%, while reducing the time required for AI model training by up to 1.5 times. This is part of the company's broader strategy to reduce costs and improve manufacturing precision across its production processes.

Kim Hyun-jun, Head of Intel Korea's Sales Division, emphasized, "We are excited to help LG Innotek enhance its manufacturing efficiency and competitiveness through AI-driven solutions." Lee Sang-seok, Head of LG Innotek's Production Innovation Center, added, "Intel's collaboration will speed up the development of our smart factories, allowing us to create greater value for customers through innovative production techniques."

For the PCB industry, this solution offers a reusable, low-cost AI inspection path, particularly suited for high-value manufacturing processes, demonstrating a scalable approach for companies looking to integrate AI into their quality control systems.
