Japan's PCB Production Value Shrinks for Ninth Consecutive Month in July, Second Largest Decline of the Year

According to the latest statistics released by the Japan Electronics Packaging Circuits Association (JPCA), the production volume of printed circuit boards (PCBs) in Japan, including rigid PCBs, flexible PCBs, and module substrates, in July 2023 decreased by 16.4% from the same period last year to 818,000 square meters and has been declining for 18th consecutive months. The production value dropped sharply by 22.6% to JPY 49.772 billion, which has been declining for 9 consecutive months and the fifth consecutive month of double-digit (more than 10 percent) decline, with the second-largest decrease so far this year (second only to April 2023, which had a massive decline of 24.7%, the largest since February 2013).

In terms of category, the production volume of printed circuit boards (PCBs) in Japan for July 2023 showed a decline in rigid PCBs, with production volume dropped by 15.9% to 648,000 square meters, marking the 17th consecutive month of decline, while the production value for rigid PCBs decreased by 20.8% to JPY 30.824 billion, which has been declining for the 11th consecutive month; The production volume of flexible PCBs dropped by 15.0% to 121,000 square meters, marking the second consecutive month of contraction, while the production value for flexible PCBs dropped by 10.2% to JPY 2.397 billion, which marks the eighth consecutive month of decline in the past nine months; The production volume of module substrates dropped sharply by 24.7% to 49,000 square meters, marking the 14th consecutive month of decline, while the production value for module substrates decreased by 27.2% to JPY 16.551 billion, which marks the fourth consecutive month of contraction.

From January to July 2023,the production volume of PCBs in Japan decreased by 14.1% from the same period last year to 5.765 million square meters, and the production value decreased by 16.0% to JPY 341.160 billion.Among them, the production volume of rigid PCBs decreased by 13.4% to 4.687 million square meters, and the production value decreased by 19.3% to JPY 208.226 billion; The production volume of flexible PCBs decreased by 8.1% to 780,000 square meters, and the production value decreased by 8.5% to JPY 15.707 billion; The production volume of module substrates dropped sharply by 34.2% to 299,000 square meters, while the production value decreased by 10.6% to JPY 117.227 billion.
