Intel's German chip factory faces delays, mass production may slip to 2030

Intel's Fab 29 near Magdeburg, Germany, is set to be one of Europe's largest and most advanced semiconductor fabrication facilities when it comes online around 2030. However, the project has encountered several delays.

Construction was initially slated for the first half of 2023 but was pushed to summer 2024 due to EU subsidy delays. Further delays, due to the relocation of black soil, have pushed construction of modules 1 and 2 to May 2025. HardwareLuxx reports that at recent hearings, 13 objections to the project remained, delaying formal approval.

These setbacks have also impacted the production timeline. While Intel's Fab 29 modules 1 and 2 were originally scheduled to start operations in late 2027 and make chips on Intel's 14A (1.4nm) and 10A (1nm) production nodes, production is now estimated to begin between 2029 and 2030. This revised schedule reflects the complexities of the project, including pending EU subsidies and environmental concerns. Despite the challenges, Intel is proceeding with groundwork, ensuring that the site is ready for construction once all approvals are secured.

Fab 29.1 and Fab 29.2 will span a combined area of 81,000 square meters, with a length of 530 meters and a width of 153 meters. The buildings will reach a height of 36.7 meters, including roof structures for air conditioning and heating, and will feature several underground floors.

While Intel is committed to building a state-of-the-art facility, the project's timeline remains fluid, subject to the finalization of approvals and ongoing environmental assessments.
