Intel wins UK leg of global patent battle with R2 over chips

Intel won the London leg of a global patent dispute with U.S. rival R2 Semiconductor on July 31. R2 had sought an injunction to potentially block the sale of some Intel chips.

R2 sued Intel in London's High Court in 2022, claiming Intel infringed its patent by marketing chips with fully integrated voltage regulators. Intel counterclaimed to invalidate R2's patent, which pertains to on-chip power supplies for microprocessors. The High Court ruled in Intel's favor on Wednesday.

Judge Richard Hacon's written ruling from an April trial stated that R2's patent is invalid due to a lack of an "inventive step" based on previous inventions. However, he noted that Intel would have infringed R2's patent if it had been valid.

Intel and R2 did not immediately comment.

R2's court filings argued that Intel's entire current product line, including microchips and processors with fully integrated voltage regulators, infringed its patent. R2 sought an injunction to prevent further alleged infringement, which could have halted the sale of Intel products, including "Ice Lake" server chips.

This ruling contrasts with a February decision by a German court in R2's favor. The Dusseldorf regional court found that Intel products infringed R2's patent, a decision currently under appeal according to Intel's lawyers.

Intel and R2 are also involved in similar litigation in France and Italy.
