According to a report from Korean media outlet The Elec on September 12, Samsung has secured U.S. AI chip firm Ambarella as a customer for its 2-nanometer (nm) foundry. Samsung aims to complete tape-out by next year, with commercial production expected in late 2026 or 2027.
The South Korean chipmaker had previously signed Ambarella as a customer for its 5nm process earlier this year, providing chips for the company’s advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) with self-driving features.
In June, Samsung showcased its SF2A 2nm process targeted at automotive chips, which was initially slated for a 2027 launch. However, sources suggest Ambarella is pushing for production to start in 2026, indicating Samsung may begin production earlier than planned.
This partnership with Ambarella could serve as a key reference for Samsung to attract more customers for its advanced process nodes.
Earlier this month, TrendForce reported that TSMC held a 62.3% market share in the foundry sector for the second quarter, while Samsung was the runner-up with 11.5%.
While TSMC counts major clients like Apple, Nvidia, Qualcomm, and AMD for its most advanced nodes, Samsung has yet to secure such high-profile customers for its cutting-edge technology.
Though Samsung Foundry manufactures chips for Nvidia, AMD, and Intel, it does not do so for their most advanced nodes, sources said. Samsung continues testing advanced nodes with Qualcomm, but this has yet to lead to mass production.
