Grant helps circuit board manufacturer add emerging technology

Poly Electronics LLC, a high-tech designer, manufacturer, and nationwide distributor of printed circuit boards and custom electronic solutions, is enhancing its manufacturing lines with three artificial intelligence-powered inspection machines.

The addition of Koh Young’s 3D automatic optical inspection (AOI) systems moves the company closer to its goal of delivering zero-defect products, bolstering the region’s reputation for technology jobs.

Funded in part by the Manufacturing Readiness Grant from the Indiana Economic Development Corp. (IEDC), this technology verifies the placement of components and solder on each circuit board, ensuring quality beyond global IPC-610 standards.

“With new equipment on both our SMT and THT lines, we can meet production targets and enhance yield, moving us closer to a zero-defect process,” said Paul Eastwood, director of manufacturing at Poly Electronics. “Advancements in technology now allow AI to interpret 3D AOI profilometric data, enabling real-time adjustments to prevent issues.”

The equipment uses deep learning and advanced optical scanning technology to measure component shapes, flag errors in solder fillets and component placement, and review post-reflow issues.

The user-friendly visual software and touchscreen interface are facilitating employee training, leading to skill advancement and higher learning.

“The Manufacturing Readiness Grant from the IEDC aims to prepare Hoosier manufacturers for future industries,” said Poly Electronics President Matt Kain. “This investment not only bolsters Northern Indiana’s reputation for technology jobs but also creates long-term job opportunities.”

The grant was awarded to 34 recipients across 22 Indiana counties, spanning aerospace, defense, automotive, custom electronics, and medical devices. The IEDC, in partnership with Conexus Indiana, provided these funds on a 1:1 investment match in 2021, supporting technology-based capital investment projected to exceed $68.6 million.

Poly Electronics, headquartered at 4400 Wyland Drive, has been engineering and assembling custom electronics since 1973.
