Taiwan semiconductor company GlobalWafers (6488.TWO) has officially joined SEMI's Silicon Photonics Industry Alliance, becoming one of 30 companies in this global trade platform. The company highlighted the importance of silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology, which serves as the foundation for silicon photonics, and noted that it has already begun small-scale shipments to this market.
GlobalWafers is also expanding its 12-inch SOI wafer production capacity at its Missouri plant, supported by the US CHIPS Act. The company expects production volumes to rise significantly once mass production starts next year.
According to SEMI, the global silicon photonics market is projected to reach $7.86 billion by 2030, with an annual growth rate of 25.7%, underscoring the market's vast potential.
The Silicon Photonics Industry Alliance, established on September 3, includes key players such as TSMC and ASE, and involves companies focused on semiconductor manufacturing, assembly, testing, and IC design.
