Germany's Infineon Technologies AG, the leading automotive chipmaker, will establish a NT$1.2 billion (US$37.06 million) R&D center in Taiwan, as announced by Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs on June 17.

This advanced automotive and wireless communication semiconductor R&D center will be set up with support from the German Institute Taipei and marks the first instance of a major European chipmaker establishing such a facility in Taiwan. This highlights Taiwan's growing influence in the global semiconductor and automotive chip sectors.

Economics Minister J.W. Kuo (郭智輝) stated that the new center would bring world-leading automotive wireless remote control technology to Taiwan, boost technical cooperation between local manufacturers and international experts, and help domestic players enter the global automotive market.

Sam Geha, Infineon's EVP of IoT, compute, and wireless business, praised Taiwan's innovative ecosystem, skilled R&D talent, and robust industrial clusters. The new center, an upgrade from Infineon's existing wireless communication R&D lab, will receive NT$480 million (US$14.82 million) in subsidies from MOEA's global R&D and innovation partnership program, with Infineon raising NT$720 million (US$22.23 million) independently.

The center is projected to lead to NT$2.7 billion (US$83.38 million) in investments and generate NT$60 billion (US$1.853 billion) in production value for Taiwan's automotive industry.
