Applied Materials to invest $400 million in building the engineering center in Bengaluru

US-based semiconductor company Applied Materials has announced its engagement with over 40 suppliers and academic institutions as part of its planned collaborative engineering center in Bengaluru. The center is projected to create 500 advanced engineering jobs within its first five years and potentially an additional 2,500 jobs in the manufacturing ecosystem. Applied Materials aims to leverage the expertise of industry stakeholders to develop innovative ideas in India’s domestic semiconductor supply chain and talent development. The company believes that this initiative is crucial for India to establish itself as a key player in the global semiconductor landscape.

“This is a pivotal moment for India to position itself as a key player in the global semiconductor landscape,” said Prabu Raja, President of the Semiconductor Products Group at Applied Materials. The collaborative engineering center will foster synergy among industry stakeholders and foster a culture of technical research, skill development, and knowledge sharing.

Applied Materials plans to invest $400 million over four years in building the engineering center. The decision to establish the center followed a meeting between Gary E. Dickerson, President and CEO of Applied Materials, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US. The company’s aim is to shorten the time to commercialization and develop a sustainable semiconductor ecosystem in India. Additionally, Applied Materials will partner with top-tier universities and institutions to drive innovation and cultivate a skilled workforce to support the domestic semiconductor ecosystem.

“We have embarked on a transformative journey to power India’s semiconductor mission,” said Srinivas Satya, Country President of Applied Materials India.
