Amkor Technology Vietnam Plans to Triple Production Capacity - IC Manufacturing

Expansion Plans and Production Growth

According to a recent project report, Amkor's $1.6 billion facility in Bac Ninh province plans to expand its annual production volume from 420 tons to 1,600 tons. The company does not sell its products in Vietnam, as all output is intended for export.

Amkor aims to partially operate and expand the plant simultaneously starting in September, with full-scale stable operations targeted for October.

Currently, the factory produces 420 million units annually, equivalent to 147 tons or 11.6% of its projected stable capacity. The facility employs 1,200 workers, with plans to increase the workforce to 5,700 as operations scale up.

Investment and Expansion Milestones

Amkor officially inaugurated the Bac Ninh factory in October 2023, marking a major milestone in its Vietnam expansion strategy. The 57-acre (23.1-hectare) facility, located in the Yen Phong 2C Industrial Park, offers turnkey semiconductor solutions, from design to electrical testing, with a focus on Advanced System-in-Package (SiP) and memory production.

The project was initially launched with a $529.6 million investment, but in July 2024, Amkor secured approval for an additional $1.07 billion investment, 11 years ahead of its original 2035 timeline to reach $1.6 billion in total investment.

Operational Achievements and Economic Contribution

Amkor officially began operations in Q3 2024, generating export revenue of VND 337.5 billion ($13.3 million) last year. In 2024 alone, the company paid $3.5 million in taxes, further solidifying its economic contributions to Vietnam.

With the planned capacity expansion and workforce growth, Amkor Technology Vietnam is set to become a key player in the global semiconductor supply chain, reinforcing Vietnam's growing role in high-tech manufacturing.
