Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) has selected Tainan and Kaohsiung for its new R&D centers, as announced by Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs on August 21. The NT$8.64 billion (US$270.5 million) investment is aimed at advancing AI and silicon photonics technologies, contributing to Taiwan's vision of becoming an "AI silicon island."

Following a meeting between Minister of Economic Affairs J.W. Kuo and AMD representatives led by Senior Vice President David Wang, the ministry highlighted the strategic significance of these locations. Tainan, the hometown of AMD CEO Lisa Su, is a key manufacturing site for TSMC’s 3nm AI chips. Kaohsiung, where TSMC is developing a new 2nm chip fab, is also a focus for talent development.

AMD’s decision aligns with Taiwan’s A+ global R&D and innovation partnership program, which has attracted other semiconductor giants like Nvidia, ASML, Lam Research, and Applied Materials. Last month, AMD secured a NT$3.31 billion subsidy, covering 38% of its three-year investment.

Taiwan’s extensive supply chain, supporting AI components from TSMC to AI servers by Hon Hai, Quanta, and Wiwynn, is key to this strategy. Approximately 33 Taiwanese companies will collaborate in AMD’s R&D initiatives, expected to train over 10,000 AI professionals annually over the next three years.
