AMD and IIT-B join hands to support semiconductor startups in India

AMD, a global chip giant, announced a partnership with SINE, an incubator at IIT Bombay, on July 15. Under the partnership, AMD will provide grants to IIT Bombay-incubated startups developing energy-efficient Spiking Neural Network (SNN) chips. The startups will focus on significantly reducing the energy consumption of conventional neural networks.

Numelo Technologies received the first grant to develop SNN chips using ultralow power quantum tunnelling on silicon on insulator (SOI) technology.

Jaya Jagadish, Country Head of AMD India, stated, "AMD aims to reduce energy costs and improve efficiency across all our product lines. We are aiming for a 30x improvement in energy efficiency for AMD processors and accelerators powering high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) training by 2025. This means we are significantly increasing the energy efficiency of compute nodes at a faster rate than the industry-wide improvement over the past five years. We continuously collaborate with industry bodies and academia to support initiatives that drive innovation in this field."

The company also highlighted that this partnership is part of AMD's corporate social responsibility initiative.

Shaji Varghese, CEO of SINE-IIT Bombay, added, "As India develops a comprehensive semiconductor strategy, it's crucial to nurture, build, and grow startups in this space. SINE aims to foster and create strong, product-focused, cutting-edge semiconductor design startups by addressing gaps in the industry, as design cycles are long and entry costs are high in the semiconductor design area."
