The Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI) has revealed that six countries have confirmed their participation in the Thailand Electronics Circuit Asia (THECA) 2024 event, scheduled for July 24-26. This event signifies Thailand's strategic push to become a global manufacturing hub for Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) and related components, attracting significant investments from semiconductor and electronics industry players.

The Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI), in collaboration with Thai Printed Circuit Board Association and the Hong Kong Printed Circuit Association, are driving this initiative. Thailand's robust infrastructure, skilled workforce, and strong supply chain are attracting significant investments from semiconductor and PCB manufacturers. The electronics and electrical appliances sector plays a vital role in Thailand's economy, contributing significantly to exports. In recent years, this sector has seen a surge in investments, with the BOI receiving investment applications totaling over 535 billion Baht. In 2023 alone, the value of applications reached 334.8 billion Baht, a 2.5-fold increase compared to 2022. This represents 40% of all investment applications received by the BOI.

The PCB and PCBA segments have demonstrated remarkable growth, with investment values surging from 15.6 billion Baht in 2021 and 15.9 billion Baht in 2022 to a staggering 100.86 billion Baht in 2023. This trend continues in 2024, with the first five months of the year witnessing 27 PCB and PCBA investment projects valued at 36.044 billion Baht. Leading companies from China (including Taiwan and Hong Kong) and Japan are driving these investments. The BOI has revised its investment promotion measures to comprehensively support the PCB industry, including its entire supply chain.

THECA 2024 will serve as a platform for networking, business negotiations, and joint ventures within the PCB industry. With over 1,000 business matching sessions anticipated and generate 20 billion Baht in trade value. Thailand's PCB supply chain is expected to strengthen, supporting the growth of various related industries, including electrical appliances, automotive, telecommunications, medical equipment, automation, and robotics.

With the addition of 50 new factories from investors receiving BOI incentives, Thailand's market share in the global PCB market is projected to rise to 10%, placing it among the top four PCB producers globally, behind China, South Korea, and Japan. This growth is expected to create an estimated 50,000 to 80,000 new jobs in the sector.

The global PCB market is projected to reach 3 trillion Baht (86.17 billion US dollars) by 2026, growing at an average annual rate of 3.3%. HDI PCBs are expected to experience even higher growth at an 11.1% annual rate due to their smaller size, high efficiency, and lightweight design. Flexible PCBs are also witnessing increasing demand in wearable technology and smart devices, with the market projected to reach 530 billion Baht (15.29 billion US dollars) by 2026.

Mr. Canis Chung, President of the Hong Kong Printed Circuit Board Association, emphasized the growing interest and confidence in Asia, particularly Thailand, from PCB and PCBA manufacturers worldwide. PCBs and PCBAs are fundamental components for electronic materials and products, serving as the core for developing cutting-edge products that shape the future of the world. Confirmed participating countries in THECA include China, Korea, Japan, the Philippines, India, and the Netherlands.

The Thai Printed Circuit Board Association, the Microelectronics Technology Center, and Mahidol University have jointly established the Thailand Electronics Circuit Center, dedicated to research and development, supply chain building within Thailand, prototype PCB production, workforce development, and the advancement of domestic electronic products.
