Fujitsu to Sell Nagano Plant to Leading Printed Circuit Board Manufacturer, FICT

Fujitsu (6702) has announced that it will sell the land and buildings of its Nagano plant to FICT, which specializes in printed circuit board manufacturing. Fujitsu has already withdrawn from production at the same factory and will effectively withdraw from manufacturing in Nagano Prefecture through this sale.

As part of its strategy to transform into a Digital Transformation company and focus on IT services, Fujitsu will completed the sale of its Nagano plant on November 1. The sale price was not disclosed.

According to Fujitsu, the plant currently employs approximately 30 people. Regarding future employment, the company stated, "We cannot provide details, but employees will continue to work on-site".

Established in 1966, the Nagano plant played a role in the production of small and medium-sized computers as well as magnetic devices. It employed around 4,000 people during its heyday, but its scale gradually shrank due to the relocation of production overseas and the transfer of business to subsidiaries. Fujitsu ceased manufacturing at the Nagano Factory with the restructuring of its hard disk business in 2009.

On the other hand, FICT is the origin of Fujitsu's printed circuit board business. In 2002, it merged the operations of Fujitsu's three domestic factories, including the Nagano plant, and formed Fujitsu Interconnect Technologies as an independent company. Initially, Fujitsu held full ownership, but in 2020, a majority stake was acquired by an investment fund. The company subsequently rebranded itself as FICT in 2022.

The Nagano plant site covers 103,300 square meters. An FICT representative explained the decision to acquire the entire factory, stating, "We have determined that there are business benefits to owning the entire facility, considering our future business expansion."

Fujitsu's manufacturing bases include the Suwa Factory (Suwa City), which was established in 1967 and manufactured telephones and capacitors but significantly downsized its operations in 2002 and subsequently withdrew. Among related companies, Shinetsu Fujitsu (Shinano Town, Kamiminochi District) became the FICT Kurohime Plant. There are also other companies such as Shinko Electric Industries (Nagano City), Fujitsu Component's Technical Development Center (Suwa City), and Shinano Fujitsu (Iiyama City).
